The EOH Natural History of Technology

A unified evolutionary cosmology of the digital world

This is the whole world in one place. Ten species evolved out of the same forest and split into five kingdoms: the creatures that make culture, the machines that build the terrain, the minds that are computed, the species that remember, and the lineages that are extinct and still steering everything. Each kingdom occupies a biome, each species is governed by a council, each council holds one jurisdiction, and every species is bound to the others by the web in the middle of this page. Read downward and it is a field guide; read across and it is a cosmology. Nothing in the register is isolated, which is the point of assembling it: a change in any one chapter is a change in the weather of all of them.

The five kingdoms

the biological structure

Every species belongs to one of five kingdoms. Four of them hold living species; the fifth holds the lineages that are gone and still shape the forest. A kingdom is a statement about what a creature is for, not about what it is made of — which is why social platforms and studios sit together in Creatura while the machines that run them sit in Technologica.

The ten biomes

the planetary nervous system

Each kingdom occupies a biome, and no biome stands alone. The Mountains are provisioned from above the Forest, the Sea carries every crossing the Plains have ever made, and the Canopy sits over all of it — which is why the atlas is read as one nervous system rather than ten maps.

The ten biomes

the planetary nervous system
  • The Social Canopy

    Aves Socialis

Signal skies, aesthetic groves, viral gardens, encrypted thickets and community meadows — the airborne biome every other habitat lives under.

  • The Story Canopy

    Vulpes Cinematica

The canopy of carried stories, where a premiere is a kill and the whole forest arrives to watch it shared.

  • The Data Forest

    Ursus Informaticus

The original habitat, and the one every other species was indexed from: dense, tall, and organised by the trails the Bears leave.

  • The Cloud Mountains

    Formica Nimbus

The compute range above the forest — colonies stacked in cold altitudes, provisioning every biome from above it.

  • The Silicon Savannas

    Elephas Siliconus

The open plain of physical computation: grazing herds of silicon, and the substrate everything else is built on.

  • The Threat Skies

    Draco Custodia

The upper air where intrusions arrive out of nowhere, patrolled by the one species that met them first.

  • The Mechanical Plains

    Equus Automata

The ground where machines learn to move — herds that lift, weld, drive and walk, and the first creatures to work outside the forest.

  • The Packet Sea

    Octopus Reticulata

The submerged layer: every crossing, every packet and every route lives here, and nothing in the register is anywhere without it.

  • The Code Underworld

    Serpens Codifica

The habitat below the forest floor, where the organs the whole register runs on are written, shed and rewritten.

  • The Data Plains

    Canis Algorithmus

Open ground of computed pattern: no soil, no altitude and no water — the one biome in the atlas that was computed rather than grown.

III

The ten councils

the political superstructure

One council per species, one jurisdiction per council, and no council without a chapter that documents its seats and charter in full. Between them they govern visibility, belief, narrative, provision, silicon, defence, motion, routing, logic and thought.

The ten councils

the political superstructure

Each species governs through its own council, and each council holds one jurisdiction. Read together they are the government of the digital world: what is visible, what is believed, what is carried, what is provisioned, what is built, what is defended, what moves, what connects, what is written and what is thought.

IV

The five laws

how everything evolves

The same five laws govern every chapter in this atlas: a species must expand with the habitat, a mutation must increase survival rather than size, a new predator forces adaptation, a change in the forest forces migration, and an extinct species keeps steering the living.

The five laws of the Data Forest

Rise, dominance, decline and extinction are not storytelling — they are procedure. Every chapter of the Bestiary is read against these five laws, so any industry can be compared with any other.

  1. Law I

    Habitat Expansion

A species must expand its range as the Data Forest grows.

Failure is decline — the habitat moves on without it.

  2. Law II

    Mutation Efficiency

Every new organ must increase survival rather than size.

Bad mutations bring instability: bigger, not stronger.

  3. Law III

    Competition Pressure

A new predator forces adaptation, always.

Failure is displacement — the range goes to whoever adapted.

  4. Law IV

    Ecological Shift

When the forest changes, the species must migrate with it.

Failure is isolation: the habitat simply stops including it.

  5. Law V

    Relic Preservation

Extinct species leave relics that shape future evolution.

This law never fails. It is how old technology still steers new technology.

V

The inter-species web

the living food web

Eight edges hold the whole cosmology together, and one of them touches every node: the Serpents write the organs every other creature runs on. Read the web before the chapters and each saga arrives as a consequence rather than a description.

The inter-species web

the living food web
  • Search Bears ↔ Social Birds

    Visibility ↔ virality

What the Bears index becomes what the Birds can make travel, and what the Birds amplify becomes what the Bears must index.

  • Streaming Foxes ↔ Social Birds

    Stories ↔ trends

A story arrives whole; the flocks decide whether the forest receives it as a story or as a moment.

  • Cloud Ants ↔ Hardware Elephants

    Infrastructure ↔ computation

The Ants provision the altitude; the Elephants supply the silicon the provisioning actually runs on.

  • AI Wolves ↔ Developer Serpents

    Intelligence ↔ code

Every paradigm the Serpents write is a habitat the Wolves can hunt in, and every hunt they return is a mutation the Serpents copy.

  • Cybersecurity Dragons ↔ Network Octopi

    Defence ↔ connectivity

Every route the Octopi open is a door, and the Dragons are the species that has to stand in it.

  • Robotics Stallions ↔ Hardware Elephants

    Motion ↔ power

The Elephants mine the power, the Stallions spend it moving, and neither species can act without the other.

  • AI Wolves ↔ Cloud Ants

    Training ↔ compute

The Wolves are the only species whose appetite for the Mountains grows faster than the Ants can dig.

  • Developer Serpents ↔ every species

    The organs of every creature

The one edge that touches every node in the web: no species in the register grew a single organ the Serpents did not first write down.

VI

The timeline of evolution

ARPANET → the AI dawn

Five eras, and the register arrived late to its own history: the first creatures were already living in a network for two decades before anyone indexed them. The last era is a forecast and is stated as one.

The timeline of evolution

ARPANET → the AI dawn
  1. The Proto Era

    1969–1989

The wet ground before biology: machines that existed only to pass a message, and the first creatures to live in a network rather than on a list.

    • ARPANET Marshlands
    • Packet Tadpoles
    • Switch Crabs
    • Mainframe Mammoths
  2. The Web Era

    1990–2005

Taxonomy first, then navigation: the forest was catalogued by hand before any species evolved to hunt it.

    • Directory Beetles
    • Search Bears
    • Forum Owls
    • the Streaming Fox ancestors
  3. The Platform Era

    2005–2015

The forest stopped being read and started being lived in — species whose habitat is other creatures’ attention.

    • Social Birds
    • Streaming Foxes
    • Cloud Ants
    • the modern Hardware Elephants
  4. The AI Era

    2015–2023

The first species computed rather than born, and the first to leave the forest entirely and work in the world beside it.

    • AI Wolves
    • the modern Developer Serpents
    • Robotics Stallions
    • Cybersecurity Dragons
  5. The Meta Era

    2023–future

Forecast, not fact: every species in the atlas is growing a form that exists in more than one layer at once.

    • Quantum species
    • Synthetic species
    • Agent species
    • Meta-species
VII

The guild system

the player-facing layer

This is where the atlas stops being lore. Ten guilds, one per species, are the working disciplines a member takes up — each with the same obligations the species itself carries in the chapters above.

The guild system

how members join the world

Ten guilds, each aligned to one species. A guild is a working discipline rather than a badge: joining one means a member takes up that species’ craft and answers for it the way the species does.

  • Navigator Guild

    Search Bears

    Exploration and relic discovery

Follows the trails, finds what the forest has forgotten, and brings it back to the register.

  • Storyweaver Guild

    Streaming Foxes

    Narrative creation

Carries a story from premise to premiere, and answers for how it lands.

  • Skycaller Guild

    Social Birds

    Trend shaping

Opens a signal, and lives with where the flock takes it.

  • Cloudwright Guild

    Cloud Ants

    Infrastructure building

Raises the altitude everything else is provisioned from.

  • Silicorne Guild

    Hardware Elephants

    Hardware mastery

Builds and tends the physical substrate under every other species.

  • Dragonguard Guild

    Cybersecurity Dragons

    Defence and protection

Stands in the door: intrusion response, vault keeping and threat reading.

  • Mechanist Guild

    Robotics Stallions

    Automation and motion

Gives a machine a body and a task, and answers for how it moves.

  • Netweaver Guild

    Network Octopi

    Connectivity and routing

Keeps the crossings open and the routes honest.

  • Codemancer Guild

    Developer Serpents

    Programming and logic

Writes the organ another species will run on, and versions it.

  • Patterncaller Guild

    AI Wolves

    Reasoning, cognition and synthetic creation

Trains, evaluates and reasons — and keeps synthetic entities inside the licence they act under.

The living record

ratified by the Board

The atlas is canon, and canon is kept by hand rather than rewritten quietly. Dated, sourced events across every lineage are recorded here as the register learns them — proposals from members, published only by the Board and the scheduled sweep.

The living register

1 recorded

The catalogue above is canon and stands still. This is the part that moves: what has actually happened to these species and their breeds, filed by the Curator on its weekly sweep — dated, labelled with what it rests on, and linked out to the source behind it.

Anthropic transitioned its Model Context Protocol to a stateless architecture.

Anthropic updated its Model Context Protocol to function as a stateless model. This change alters how the breed manages context and state during interactions, potentially improving scalability and reducing memory overhead for developers. It represents a structural shift in how the wolf interacts with external data environments.

The engine of player action

how anyone moves inside the atlas

The atlas says who lives here and the guilds say who works with whom — but neither says how a member actually moves. The Mission System is the procedural layer: carry a relic into a jurisdiction, report the table, and the world answers at scale.
